In a union of two precision automotive molders, Chesterfield, Mich.- headquartered Prism Plastics Inc. has acquired Tech Molded Plastics Inc. of Meadville, Pa. Effective June 23, the deal nearly doubles Prism’s size and creates an operation with combined annual sales of roughly $60 million.

PRISM Plastics recently acquired Meadville, PA-based Tech Molded Plastics, a full-service injection molded plastics company specializing in tight tolerance precision molding and production molds. Through this acquisition, PRISM Plastics will effectively double its size in terms of sales. The move will give the organization immediate access to a proven and sophisticated team of professionals while also adding in-house mold building capabilities to the company’s service offerings.

Achieving a defective PPM rate of less than one is practically unheard of. That’s exactly what PRISM Plastics has been able to do while shipping more than half a billion parts annually. Maintaining consistent quality is a priority for any manufacturer, elevating the perceived importance of the quality control department. Prism Plastics, however, takes a different approach to quality control. The company operates without a formal quality control department, a radical departure from convention. Deploying quality control resources before and during the manufacturing process, Prism achieves the precision, quality and consistency that make post-production quality control redundant.

PRISM Plastics has raised a total value of $1,971 in donations benefitting The River Outreach Ministry’s “Streams of Hope” Outreach Program. Rod Bricker, president of PRISM Plastics, made the announcement. The donation is the result of a two-week long collection period in which PRISM Plastics set up drop boxes at each of its three manufacturing facilities in Chesterfield Township and Port Huron, Mich., and Harlingen, Texas. Employees and individuals in the community were encouraged to bring supplies to benefit those in need in the Port Huron area, including hats, gloves, socks, scarves, hand warmers, bottled water, Band-Aids, lotion, lip balm, baby wipes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and more. In addition, PRISM Plastics matched all funds donated by employees up to $500. “At PRISM Plastics, we’re constantly looking for ways that we can get involved in the community and provide assistance to those less fortunate,” said Bricker. “The needs of individuals and families can be great and varied during the winter months, and it’s our hope that this initiative will provide the necessary assistance to help those in need through this difficult time.”

Crain’s Detroit Business called Detroit the “epicenter of the robotics industry” 30 years ago, and now they are revisiting those claims to see how things have changed since then. For PRISM Plastics, utilizing robotics has been a critical part of the business plan since the company was founded.

“Robotics and automation is a necessity for the way we run the business,” said Jeff Ignatowski, director of sales and marketing. “Part of our strategy is to avoid labor as much as possible, allowing us to compete globally with technology by eliminating labor costs.”

PRISM Plastics, a leading high-precision plastic product company, has raised more than $30,000 for St. John Providence Hospital through the “Jerry Williams Shootout for the Cure” golf outing, which was established in memory of PRISM Plastics co-founder Jerry Williams who died from gastric cancer in 2014.

Less than a year after emerging from bankruptcy, a resurgence in manufacturing in Detroit is seen as a major pathway to continued recovery. PRISM Plastics spoke with CNBC about how it represents the next generation of manufacturers embracing leading-edge technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.

PRISM Plastics is investing $3.5 million to add seven new electric presses for facilities in Chesterfield Twp., Mich. and Harlingen, Texas as well as an extra 10,000 square feet of space in Chesterfield. This will increase PRISM’s production capacity for tight-tolerance, safety-critical plastic parts. All new equipment will be in place by July, bringing PRISM to 35 total presses.

What’s the likelihood that a company established in November 1999 to supply plastic parts for the auto industry would be thriving some 13 years later, that it would have been able not only to get through the challenges of being a start-up, but that it would have survived the blood-letting that was rife during the latter part of the last decade?

“Part of how we maintain our quality is that everything is uniform and standardized,” said Rodney Bricker, a PRISM VP. “Port Huron, Texas and now New Baltimore, we have all the same equipment, all the same uniform production and everything is interchangeable.
